Underground Engine Line Expanded - Cummins Diesel Engines - Brief Article - Statistical Data Included

Along with the introduction of its QSK78 engine, Cummins has also expanded its efforts in underground mining. The Cummins QSK19 diesel has received Mining Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and Canadian Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET) approvals for underground uses. The 650 hp rating is the first Cummins industrial engine certified, and follows the Dodge Ram pickup, with its automotive ISB engine, into the underground markets. No significant changes were needed to achieve the required emissions levels, according to the company.

"The approval of the QSK19 for underground mining is the next step in Cummins' commitment to helping customers achieve their business goals," said Mark Levett, vice president and general manager -- high horsepower business at Cummins. "We have established a dedicated marketing and engineering group; focused on expanding our presence in the underground mining industry."

"We have certified the B5.9 and the ISB for the Dodge Ram truck underground and we're in the process of certifying engines from 65 to 650 hp for use underground," said Ed Claypool. "The new range of engines that we'll be certifying for underground mining will go down to the B3.9 and B3.3, which will go all the way down to 55 hp. That will give us a full range of engines to offer for underground mining applications
