New Engines
Briggs & Stratton Commercial Power expanded its lineup of premium aircooled Vanguard engines, with new models on both ends of the power spectrum. At the lighter end, the company unveiled a new 80 cc, 2.4 hp engine, while establishing a new top end with the introduction of a new 895 cc, 31 hp twin-cylinder unit.
Briggs & Stratton Commercial Power has also continued to expand the applications for its 2/LC liquid-cooled aluminum block V-twin gasoline engine. Rated 27 hp, it is the first B&S designed liquid-cooled engine and in testing, the company said the 2/LC has demonstrated a 40 percent increase' in lifespan over air-cooled equivalents.
Engine Technology
The 2.4 hp Vanguard engine features a redesigned combustion chamber with smaller surface area, a pent-roof-combustion chamber design and a central spark plug position that creates more efficient combustion and results in reduced emissions, according to the company.
The 31 hp engine features an advanced debris management system which allows the engine to run cleaner and cooler, which enhances durability and performance, Briggs & Stratton said.
Corporate News
Briggs & Stratton recently signaled its dedication to the commercial power markets by announcing the formation of the Commercial Power business unit. The new group and its products will be identified by a new Commercial Power logo and there is also a dedicated Commercial Power sales and marketing staff with an extensive commercial background. Also as part of the Commercial Power business, the company has developed an Engine Applications Center (EAC) at its headquarters facility in Milwaukee, Wis., in which engines can be fitted and tested in OEM equipment.

New Engines
Caterpillar Inc. introduced its ACERT (advanced combustion emissions reduction technology) package for on-highway truck and bus engines at the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Ky., in late March. Caterpillar will offer five on-highway diesel models with ACERT technology; its "midrange" C7 and C9 diesels, and the heavy-duty C11, C13 and C15. The C9 engines are currently available, the C7s will begin production this month, the C13 and C15 engines in October and the C11 in December.
At last month's Intermat construction equipment show in Paris, Caterpillar announced a mid-2004 availability date for its new 18.1 L C18 ACERT off-highway diesel. It is expected the complete ACERT off-highway line will be introduced in spring of 2004.
The C18, to be built at Cat's Mossville, Ill., complex, will be available in five ratings from 575 to 765 hp. Expected applications listed by Cat for the engine includes blasthole drill rigs, four-wheel-drive agricultural tractors, forage harvesters, payers, other types of construction equipment, mining equipment, as well as irrigation, petroleum drill rigs, chippers and shredders.
