GM Powertrain has announced the availability of a 1.6 L, single overhead cam engine to the industrial engine markets. The Vortec 1600 engine, an in-line four-cylinder, is adaptable for use with gasoline, liquid propane (LP) or compressed natural gas (CNG) and carries a rating of 40 hp. The new engine widens GM'S industrial engine range from 1.6 L to 8.1 L, with engine outputs from 40 to 264 hp.
"With the addition of the Vortec 1600, GM has a broadened portfolio to satisfy the smaller displacement industrial market with great value and a trusted design," said Rick Dunagan, executive director of OEM sales for GM Powetrain.
The Vortec 1600 engine features a cast iron block with a cast aluminum cylinder head with valve seat inserts. Bore and stroke is 79 mm x 81.5 mm and the compression ratio is 9.4:1. The engine also includes a distributorless ignition system designed to reduce maintenance and increase reliability.
Originally designed by GM's Opel division, the engine is assembled at the Sao Jose dos Campos engine plant in Brazil. Current automotive applications include the Chevrolet Corsa sold in South America and Opel Corsa sold in Southeast Asia.
The Vortec 1600 engine is sold to OEMs without an intake manifold or fuel system and allows OEMs to customize their own fuel/intake system to sell to their customers. An OEM-calibrated electronic engine control module is available for each specific need, the company said.
