Cranfield University has been nominated for the prestigious BAE Systems 'Chairman's Award for Innovation' in recognition of their innovative work in engineering and science The Chairman's Award scheme recognises industry partners, as well as employees and colleagues, for the outstanding new and innovative ways in which they shape BAE Systems and contribute towards its global success. Competition is steep for the Awards, so the nomination is a great achievement.
Professor Ivana Partridge, head of Composites Centre at Cranfield, said: 'We are particularly pleased that our long established collaboration with research colleagues at BAE Systems is being recognised in this way.' The nomination is for the implementation of a thick panel tufting technique which has been developed by Giuseppe Dell'Anno, Research Assistant in the University's Materials Department.
This technique is an adaptation of ancient carpet manufacturing methods and produces through-thickness reinforced composite panels of over one inch thick.
It is seen to have significantly high potential for further usage in the civil aircraft as well as in the defence industries.
